1. Shelter and sleep

The two systems that decide the trip. Borrow the shelter for trip one if a mate has a spare — then buy whichever one you actually reach for.

  1. Tent or swag, pitched once in the yard first Essential Whichever you pick, sleep in it on your own lawn before the booking.
  2. Groundsheet or footprint under the shelter Essential
  3. Mallet and a sleeve of ten spare pegs Essential
  4. Sleeping bag rated below the coldest forecast night Essential
  5. Insulated sleeping mat, not just a padding layer Essential
  6. Pillow, or a stuff sack with a folded jumper

2. Light and power

Darkness is the newest experience of a first campout. Light on your head, light at the table, and a charge banked for the phone.

  1. Headtorch with spare batteries, kept in the tent Essential
  2. Camp lantern for the table
  3. Charged power bank and the right cable

3. Food and water

Count water deliberately and keep every smell sealed. Possums and birds attend every campsite whether invited or not.

  1. Stove with a sealed gas canister Essential
  2. Lighter plus matches in a dry tube
  3. Cook set: one pan, one pot, a wooden spoon
  4. Ten-litre water container with a tap Essential
  5. Esky or soft cooler with reusable ice packs
  6. Sealed food bin that possums cannot open Essential
  7. Wash-up basin, biodegradable soap and tea towel
  8. Bin bags — pack out everything you brought in Essential

4. Sun, rain and insects

The Australian sun does not care that it is your first trip, and a storm can arrive between tea and bed. Dress for both.

  1. SPF 50+ sunscreen, in date Essential
  2. Wide-brim hat with a chin strap for wind
  3. Packable rain jacket
  4. Insect repellent with picaridin or DEET

5. Safety and the easily forgotten

Small, cheap lines that cause miserable weekends when missing. This group is why any checklist exists at all.

  1. Sealed first-aid kit, checked each season Essential
  2. Printed trip plan in a waterproof pouch
  3. Toilet paper, wipes and a quick-dry towel
  4. Camp chair — the luxury that becomes a need
