Base layers

The layer on the skin. It decides whether the rest of the system works or fails wet.

  1. Synthetic or merino top for exertion, never cotton Essential
  2. Matching bottom for cold mornings and long drives
  3. Second clean base top reserved for sleep, sealed dry Essential
  4. Lightweight short-sleeve sun shirt for high-heat days

Mid layers

The warmth layer you add when you stop moving and the air drops.

  1. Fleece jacket that breathes and packs into its own pocket
  2. Light down or synthetic puffer for the cold camp evening Essential
  3. Long-sleeve shirt that works as light mid or sun layer
  4. Warm hat for the head loss of a clear frost night

Wind and rain shell

The shield against the souly change and the wind chill. Only useful if you can vent it.

  1. Waterproof breathable jacket with pit zips or vents Essential
  2. Windbreaker that blocks a chill without the bulk
  3. Rain over-trousers for the wet day that keeps following you
  4. Pack rain cover or a dry bag for the layers you keep dry

Sun layer

The layer that works whether or not you remember the sunscreen. Cover first, cream second.

  1. UPF 50+ long-sleeve shirt for open, reflective ground Essential
  2. Wide-brim or legionella hat that shades neck and ears Essential
  3. Sunglasses with UV400 or category-rated lens for the day
  4. Sunscreen 50+ and a lip balm with SPF for the gaps

Feet and extremities

Where the system usually fails first: wet socks, cold toes and a blister from the wrong boot.

  1. Merino or synthetic socks, one spare pair per two days Essential
  2. Camp shoes or slides so the boots come off at night
  3. Gloves for the cold morning and the hot grill handle
  4. Dry seal bags for the sleep socks and spare pair

Care and repair

The small kit that keeps the layers working past the first wash and the first snag.

  1. Biodegradable soap and a wash bag for the sink line
  2. Repair tape and a needle with thread for the shell
  3. Safety pins and elastic for a hat line or a hem
  4. A compact drying line with clips for the wet day
