Licence and rules kit

The fishing trip begins at the rules page. Cheap to check, expensive to skip.

  1. State fishing licence or fee receipt, carried as the law directs Essential
  2. Printed size and bag limits for the target species
  3. Protected-species card for the region, read once at home
  4. Digital scale or grip-weighter for honest measurements
  5. Local rules note: night limits, gear restrictions, closed zones

Tackle by method

Pack each session as a kit: rod, reel, line, leader, hooks and bait, ready to grab.

  1. Spinning combo sized for the water: beach, rocks or estuary Essential
  2. Second rod rigged for the other method, the drop-off or the softie
  3. Tackle box with leaders, swivels, hooks sorted by size
  4. Pliers, net and line scissors on one lanyard
  5. Rod holder or two for the camp and the bank

Bait and ice

Bait is the perishable the novice forgets. Its own esky or nothing.

  1. Bait esky or hard bag, separate from the drinking-ice cooler Essential
  2. Ice budget counted for fish first, bait second, drinks third Essential
  3. Bait keeper or bucket with aeration for live bait
  4. Tight-lid containers for the cut-up day's bait portions
  5. Salt and a rag for wiping the hands and the board

Clean-up station

The fillet kit is a workflow: board, knife, bowl, bag, hot water, done.

  1. Fillet knife with a sheath, plus a sharper-than-shop budget for blades Essential
  2. Fold-down table or dedicated board, never the camp dinner table Essential
  3. Fillet bowl and a heavy bin for the offal and scales
  4. Sealed bags for fillets heading to the human esky
  5. Kettle of hot water and unscented soap for the board wash

Water-side safety

The bank is the most crowded risk zone at any fishing camp.

  1. Life vests sized to every crew member on rocks or in a boat Essential
  2. Closed boots with grip for weed-slick rocks and hook drops
  3. Hi-vis layer for the dawn session on a busy bank
  4. First aid kit with a hook-injury section, eye wash included Essential
  5. Stinger or bees suit for the warm-month ocean session, region dependent

Catch-to-plate kit

From esky to dinner needs its own two minutes of planning.

  1. Skillet or grill plate sized to a whole fillet, not a chop
  2. Oil, salt, pepper and one lemon-equivalent for the fire side
  3. Foil for the camp-oven packets and the honest ugly fish
  4. Snap-lock bags for the second night's leftover portion, frozen hard
