Permits and bookings

The island starts in a booking cart, not at the boat ramp. Everything here is sorted weeks out.

  1. Camping booking confirmation for your nominated site Essential
  2. Vehicle permit to drive on the beach and sand tracks
  3. Passenger barge or ferry booking for your crossing
  4. Printed tide tables and map for the boat-radio-less era
  5. Trip plan left with a contact on the mainland

Sand driving kit

Soft sand is the island's main event. The kit below is the difference between a day out and a day digging.

  1. Quality tyre pressure gauge, checked against a known gauge Essential
  2. Air compressor that runs off the vehicle Essential
  3. Recovery boards with straps, mounted and reachable
  4. Snatch strap, shackles and soft-shackle kit
  5. Tow rope rated for beach recoveries
  6. Spare tyre checked, inflated and dig-free to reach
  7. Work gloves and a small shovel stowed outside the boot pile

Water and food

Water planning decides the crossing load. Count it before you pack the fun gear.

  1. Drinking water for the full trip, counted by the calculator Essential
  2. Second carrier for rinse and cooking water
  3. Hard or soft cooler with a real ice plan
  4. Sealed food containers for every pack and hamper
  5. Ice bricks pre-frozen at home
  6. Lidded rubbish bin that seals against scavengers

Beach camp kit

Sand camps run on shade, wind discipline and door discipline. The gear list is short and specific.

  1. Tent with sand pegs or a peg-extender kit Essential
  2. Canopy or tarp rated for coastal wind gusts
  3. Four ballast weights or water jugs for the canopy
  4. Boot tray and a shake-down towel at the tent door
  5. Swags or cots raised off the damp sand line
  6. Warm layer for the coastal nights that run cold

Safety and comms

The island has mobile dead zones and long first-aid response times. Kit and routine carry the load.

  1. First aid kit with sand-blind and sting sections Essential
  2. Head torch and lantern per shelter, plus spare batteries
  3. VHF radio or UHF channel plan for the convoy
  4. PLB for remote beach camps outside coverage Essential
  5. Hi-vis vests and a triangle for roadside breakdowns
  6. Sun shade, wide hat and UPF layers for everyone

Lake and reef-day kit

Day trips off the campground need their own small system: water, shade, and a dry bag each.

  1. Dry bags for phones, wallets and cameras
  2. Swim shirts and reef-safe coverage for the lakes
  3. Dinghy or snorkel kit only where rules allow
  4. Esky for the day-trip drinks in a shaded bed
