The rules

Terms of Use

These terms cover your use of Track & Canopy. They are written in plain language on purpose — but they are still binding, so give them a read before you scrape our checklist database or plan a solo crossing off the back of a blog comment.

Agreeing to these terms

By using this site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, that is genuinely fine — close the tab and the bush will still be there.

General information, not advice

Everything here — guides, comparisons, reviews, articles, checklists and tool outputs — is general information based on our own research and testing in Australian conditions. It is not professional, medical, financial, legal, survival or engineering advice, and it is not tailored to your specific situation. Conditions change: a route that was fine in September can be closed, flooded or burning in January. Before you act on anything you read here, verify current facts with the relevant official source — state parks and national parks agencies, the Bureau of Meteorology, local councils, and product manufacturers' instructions.

Outdoor activity involves risk

Camping, walking and four-wheel driving carry real, sometimes fatal risks that no article can eliminate. Trip fitness, water carries, remote-area communications, fire bans, seasonal closures and permit requirements are your responsibility to check and observe for your party, your vehicle and your route, on the day you travel. File trip intentions with a responsible person. Never rely on a website — including this one — in place of official forecasts and local knowledge.

Calculators & checklists

Our calculators produce conservative planning estimates from the inputs you give them, using published, field-checked assumptions that are documented on each tool page. Estimates are not guarantees: water needs vary with individuals and conditions, power draws vary with equipment and temperature, and pack weights are only as good as the numbers you enter. Treat every output as a starting point for your own judgement, and add your own safety margin for the trip you are actually taking.

Using the site

You agree not to:

  • misuse the site — no attempts to break, overload or interfere with it, and no probing of its systems;
  • republish or resell our content at scale (see Copyright & reuse below);
  • use automated scrapers against the site in ways that degrade it for other readers, or ignore standard crawl directives;
  • submit email addresses to the newsletter form that do not belong to a person who wants our dispatch.

All text, illustrations, calculations and page design on this site are © Track & Canopy. Personal use is free: read anything, print any checklist for your own trips, and share links as much as you like — sharing links is how a small publication survives. What you cannot do is republish our articles or product verdicts on another commercial site, or lift bulk content into a competing publication, without written permission. Requests go to hello@trackandcanopy.com.au.

Third-party links & purchases

Links to retailers (exclusively Amazon.com.au on this site) and official resources take you to parties we do not control. Their prices, stock, terms and privacy practices are theirs alone; a purchase is a contract between you and the seller. Our affiliate relationships are disclosed in full and never change a verdict.

Disclaimers & liability

The site is provided “as is”. We take care with our content, but we do not warrant that it is error-free, complete, or current for your particular use. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we exclude liability for indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from use of the site or reliance on its content.

Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any right or remedy you may have under the Australian Consumer Law (or any similar legislation) that cannot lawfully be excluded — including our guarantee of reasonable care and skill in providing services.

Changes & governing law

We may update these terms as the site evolves; the revision date at the top of this page is the source of truth, and material changes will be noted here. These terms are governed by the law of New South Wales, Australia, and the parties submit to the courts of that jurisdiction. If any clause is found unenforceable, the rest of the terms carry on without it.
