Product reviews, one item at a time

A buying guide picks between five products. A review answers a narrower question: is this specific one right for how you actually camp? Each page reads the maker's published specs against the conditions that wear gear out here — heat, humidity, strong sun and sudden storms.

MSR Hubba Hubba NX 2

Best all-round two-person hiking tent. The safe first choice for pairs who want one tent that pitches fast, breathes well in humidity and survives hard summers. It is not the lightest two-person tent here, and it runs tight once two full packs move inside.

Fjallraven Kanken

Best all-round day pack for town, travel and light walks. The Kanken is the buy when you want one simple pack that suits a commute, a weekend walk and a trip abroad. It is hard-wearing, water-resistant and easy to pack, and it looks as good in a cafe as on a track. The trade is a plain back and no real harness, so it carries a heavy load less happily.

Naturehike Cloud Up 2

Best value light tent for two-person backpacking. The Cloud Up 2 is the buy when you want a real backpacking tent without a big-brand price. It weighs a fraction of a car tent, packs small, and sheds rain with a waterproof fly. The trade is fit and finish: it asks for care on pitch and a smart site in wind and condensation.

Osprey Daylite Plus

Best do-it-all day pack for trail, town and travel. The Daylite Plus is the buy when you want one pack that suits a bushwalk, a workday and a flight. It carries a day's layer, water and a laptop in comfortable Osprey harness, with pockets that keep it tidy. It is a day pack, not a trekker, so multi-night loads want a bigger bag.

Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack

Best packable backup bag for travel and light days. The Ultralight Stuff Pack is the buy when you want a spare day bag that weighs next to nothing and folds into its own pocket. On the day you need it, a market haul or a beach walk, it appears. It has thin straps and no real back, so it is a light carry, not a hiking pack.

Platypus Big Zip EVO

Best easy-clean reservoir for hiking and riding. The Big Zip EVO is the buy when you want hands-free water on the move and hate the faff of a narrow bladder. Its zip-open top lets you pour in water, drop in ice and reach in to scrub it clean. The trade is a bulkier flat sack that must be washed and dried properly, or mould will find the corners.
