This is a first-hand case study, with our own numbers, so we flag that up front. It is not a general guide. Over three months we took an overnight pack from 16.2 kilograms to 11.4. That is a saving of roughly 30 percent, and the pack felt like a different object by the end. We set out to cut the load on a two or three-day walk, without cutting the gear that keeps us alive in a bad hour. Most of the win came from two categories. A chunk of the money we spent changed nothing. What follows is the method, the swaps that worked, the dead ends, and how to repeat it.
